Policy category summary: The AJP is the only political party in Aotearoa New Zealand with a serious commitment to tackling major sources of emissions in ways which are credible, compassionate and aligned with climate science. We support a rapid reduction in animal agriculture (which is responsible for around half of Aotearoa New Zealand’s emissions) by transitioning to a plant-based economy, supporting farmers to grow produce instead of farming animals and addressing the profoundly detrimental impact of climate change on animals. Additionally, animals are extremely vulnerable to the storms, flooding and fires we continue to see in Aotearoa New Zealand as a result of climate change.
We support policies that reduce emissions, avoid unnecessary animal suffering, improve human and non-human animal health, and restore and expand our waterways, forests and wildlife. We reject ineffective solutions that aim to perpetuate the status quo. We are committed to supporting animals of all kinds to adapt to the changes in climate that are already underway, and that which are predicted, in order to create a sustainable future.
