The proposed Regulatory Standards Bill represents a significant and concerning shift in New Zealand’s regulatory framework, with potentially far-reaching consequences for animal welfare. This document outlines AJP’s analysis of the Bill, highlighting three critical flaws that could undermine decades of progress in animal protection. By prioritising economic efficiency over the recognition of animal sentience, weakening safeguards for animal welfare and introducing impractical regulatory barriers, the Bill risks dismantling essential protections. We strongly oppose the current proposal and advocate for a reconsideration that upholds New Zealand’s ethical obligations to animals, ensures robust enforcement and maintains the ability to implement comprehensive and effective animal welfare and protection standards.
